Guess who's bitching...

Bumped into Billy and Aaron after their RT tonight. Had a drink with them and regaled them what happened just 30 minutes before I met them.

I was smoking while listening to my Discman, walking to collect a cheque while I was stopped. This very decent looking guy just approached me and shoved a flyer at me. He asked if I were free to attend his Bible study group on Thursday. Well, it pretty amazed me that he had a flyer just to promote that. Politely, I declined, saying that I had something on. He then flipped the flyer over and inquired my availability on the Thursday 2 weeks down. Needless to say I was busy too.

The highly interesting thing was that on the flyer with a clip art of a cute lil boy on it read: "Join us for an evening of Bible studies, followed by childhood games." It was the "childhood games" part which scared the shit outta me. What the fuck?!

If there were any childhood games I'll engage in at the moment, that'll probably be re-enacting out scenes from Star Wars with these ultra-cool mofos.

All you need is maybe 2 or 3 but 12?!” Well, finally, here at the snug and friendly Substation Gallery, pedal dealers from Singapore are here to show you why. The Art Of Gear Stomping is a showcase of different guitar pedal effects and the sounds they make, featuring brands such as Catalinbread, Z-Vex, George Dennis, MoogerFooger, Line 6, Visual Sound and Fulltone to name a few. Brought to you by the following dealers, City Music Pte. Ltd., MrMisse Electronics, WakeMeUpMusic, Fierce Design, Empty71 and JM Guitars, this inaugural event will showcase pedal modders and used gear.

Also for the very first time in Singapore, a clinic by our very own local musicians, Daniel Sasson (Electrico), Wendy Phua (Zhen), Linda Ong (Lunarin), Fuzz (Phorous and IF), Seng Woei Yuan (The Love Experiment), Muhammad Alkhatib (Astreal) and Nicholas Chan (MUON, The Death of Cinema and Astreal). These musicians will be displaying their effects and will show us why and how they incorporate the use of guitar effects in their music.

Crazy night...

Great night out at the Monday Sessions last night. It was damn fun. Got high and danced like an idiot to Force Vomit which dished out Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' with Rizman Putra of Tiramisu rapping L.L.Cool J's 'Cool Like That' over the tune!!! Fucken funny!!! The rest of the membersss who were there had heaps of fun...

Managed to get Linda "I don't exercise so I don't dance' Ong from Lunarin to do the mash potato. And Kah Wye was smashed. So that's pretty hilarious.

B-Quartet dropped 2 Radiohead covers this time round which Johann happened to be there piffed at. Anyways, I thought their cover of 'Paranoid Android' was great... They played it note-for-note with the vocal samples and all. But the killer cover was 'Idiotque'. Fucken amazing doesn't even begin to describe it. Everyone was blown away.

Got home at almost 4am after supper. It's insane... and it's only the 1st day of a 5-day working week!!! Too much to take. No more next week!

Anyways, I called her up once. Was chatting to her and you know, "trying to get to know her". The topic started to revolve around her friends and how materialistic they were. She started complaining to me.

"Some of my friends are damn bad. They would only go out with guys if they drive Mercedes Benz, BMWs, GTIs, etc."

I went, "Wow, that's pretty fucked up... How about you?"

I find that the weekly programme "Desperate Housewives" lacks any educational or entertainment value. What's even worse is that it may send a social message that the immoral activities as shown in the programme are in vogue, therefore acceptable.

We should not encourage our married Singaporeans to engage in extra-marital affairs. Rather, we need to place premium on the value of family where married adults live out their marriage vows.

The TV show would be regarded by many as "trash", yet MediaCorp's Channel 5 is allowed to broadcast it.

Obviously, this person doesn't live in the real world... Watching a TV show which promotes good family does not and never will ensure monogamy. Inherently, that comes straight from yourself. How you can keep your dick in your pants, etc. This type of people scares me...

Looks like my old army buddy mate, Bee Thiam kickstarted his dream project, Asian Film Archive where they, well ahem, archive critically acclaimed, yet commercially unrecognised films. It really looks interesting. I didn't expect he will get it moving so fast. I was talking to him last November and he mentioned that to me...

Always great to see a friend pursuing his passion. Sorta gives you the inspiration and drive to carry out your passion too.

Brandon Routh as Superman. The picture we've been waiting for... Somehow, it feels so wrong. Not that I won't watch it though when it comes out...

Here's a few subtle changes that were made:

• The character's S insignia is slightly smaller and higher on his chest, and instead of being painted on, it's more of a three-dimensional plate.

• The insignia is added to Superman's belt buckle.

• Costume designer Louise Mingenbach preserved the blue, red and yellow motif, but the shades are slightly darker than the bright primary colors of the comics. Superman's yellow belt is more golden, and his cape is a deep scarlet.

We've started...

Finally, we got our collective asses down to it. We finally started recording 'High School Girls' last night. Melvin started tracking his drum parts at 1830. Our friend, Fritz came down and helped us mike up Weiyuan's bass cabinet. So hopefully, everything will sound good. Alvin "I'm an one-take wonder, muthafucka" Anathan came down after work, buying dinner for Melvin who looked strangely angsty last night. The token black guy did his track in one take. Tonight, it's left to me and Yeeyong to track our guitar parts and the lead vocals. Probably, we'll try some backing vocals as well. Think I'll be over at Weiyuan's tommorrow night to add some more stuff on the recording.

Hopefully, the end result will justify me missing the 1st episode of 'Eye For An Guy 2'...

Overspent...

I'm pretty fucked till the end of the month. Just bought 6 CDs at a CD sale yesterday afte watching 'Chain' with Keith. Went hunting with Billy, Grace, Melvin, Tina and Fuzz at the shop. $10 per CD. Dammit. Ah well, at least, I know I'll like a couple of 'em... I hope!

Though I must say the film was the worst piece of turd I've seen for a while. It's one thing to be anti-Hollywood and anti-commercialism. It's another to be fucken BORING and carry out your not-so-subtle sloganeering and over self-indulgence.

Threats of imprisonment and crippling fines have prompted a Singaporean filmmaker to pull his movie from Singapore’s annual film festival.

News reports on 22 March 2005 said director Martyn See’s documentary about Singaporean opposition leader Chee Soon Juan was deemed too political by the city-state’s Board of Film Censors. The Board thus advised the filmmaker that he faces jail time as well as a fine of up to S$100,000 (US$61,300), should he screen his 26-minute film in public.

The Associated Press, quoting the Singapore Straits Times, said See's short film centers on the “civil disobedience” and travails of Chee Soon Juan, a government critic who in 2001 was himself ordered to pay 500,000 Singapore dollars to Singapore's founder, Lee Kuan Yew, and former leader Goh Chok Tong.

Chee’s case stemmed from a defamation case built on speeches he made as he campaigned for a parliamentary post in 2001. The Singapore Democratic Party's secretary-general, Chee has so far been unable to pay the penalty ordered against him, and bankruptcy proceedings—which would ban him from political involvement for years—are currently pending.

The Associated Press said that apart from warning filmmaker See, the Censors Board also advised the Singapore Film Festival organizers against calendaring the young director’s controversial film.

The Straits Times noted that under Singaporean law, local films that "contain wholly or partly either partisan or biased references to or comments on any political matter" are banned.

The Associated Press said they tried but failed to get a statement from See and festival organizers.

Despite its economic strength, Singapore has one of the strictest regimes for controlling news, opinion, and information in Southeast Asia. All mass media in the city-state are under the influence of the government, and the nation’s leaders have routinely sued critics, journalists, and even international media giants to discourage any criticism of the government or its leaders.

Singapore also regularly bans movies, the AP noted, “saying it needs to maintain ethnic and religious harmony in the Southeast Asian country of 4 million.”

Which countries ban “political films”?

Here’s a little trivia for our readers: What appears on the Google search engine when one types “ban political film”?

Answer: “Singapore” appears in the top three slots. The other pages reveal an even contest between Singapore’s ban on political films and Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9-11 (which, by the way, enjoyed a successful run in Singapore cinemas last year).

Another interesting search result is the review of Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf's film, The Silence and The Door (http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/apr2000/sff5-a27.shtml), which was screened at the Singapore International Film Festival in 2000. Get this: The film was about how Iran bans political films.

From the days of Shah Mohammed Pahlavi, who came to power in a CIA-organised military coup in 1953, virtually every aspect of film production and distribution in Iran was under government control. Back then, films critical of the regime or those with explicit references to poverty and the disadvantaged were censored or banned outright.
Following the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini's fundamentalist regime tightened censorship and imposed strict control over film content. Some 2,000 films were cut or banned outright; many filmmakers were indicted on charges of “corrupting the public”. Films cannot directly criticise the government or make political exposures of social conditions. This is Iran, one of the most repressive societies on earth.

Now compare this with the modern metropolis that is our Singapore. The regime here, like their cousin in Iran, also bans films that “directly criticise the government or make political exposures of social conditions.” Test: Dare anyone make a film about the CPF system and show how it, having forced Singaporeans to save at a rate that is by far the highest in the world, now has problems supporting retirees?

Even films not directly criticizing the PAP, but documenting the work of oppositionists like Mr J B Jeyaretnam and Dr Chee Soon Juan are prohibited. Producers of films on the two oppositionists have been threatened with imprisonment if they did not withdraw their documentaries from the Singapore International Film Festival. But this is where rule ends when it comes to the PAP because Channel News Asia has produced and is set to broadcast a look at five PAP ministers “at work” and “at their regular haunts.” The documentary lets viewers “get up close” with these ministers and lets them get to know the PAP leaders better.

Not only is it necessary for the PAP to constantly promote its officials, it is also vital to ensure that the public remains as ignorant of the opposition as possible. The ignorance can later be replaced by ad hominem attacks on opposition leaders. Mr George Yeo, one-time Minister for Information and the Arts, understands this process very well when he said: "In the wrong hands film can have a powerful impact.”

For those unfamiliar with the Films Act, it states that production and distribution of tapes whose content are directed at a political end are banned. And what constitutes a “political end”? The Act defines this as anything that:

(a) contains wholly or partly any matter which is intended or likely to affect voting in any election or national referendum in Singapore; or
(b) contains wholly or partly either partisan or biased references to or comments on any political matter, including but not limited to any of the following:
(i) an election or a national referendum in Singapore;
(ii) a candidate or group of candidates in an election;
(iii) an issue submitted or otherwise before electors in an election or a national referendum in Singapore;
(iv) the Government or a previous Government or the opposition to the Government or previous Government;
(v) a Member of Parliament;
(vi) a current policy of the Government or an issue of public controversy in Singapore; or
(vii) a political party in Singapore or any body whose objects relate wholly or mainly to politics in Singapore, or any branch of such party or body.

In other words the Government can label any film as an issue of “public controversy” or “related” to politics and ban them. Again to remind readers, the documentary that Channel News Asia is going to broadcast is considered perfectly legal. Shades of the time when the Attorney-General ruled that the PAP ministers’ illegal entry into political stations in the 1997 general election were absolutely legal.

How did this Films Act come about? The Act was amended when the Singapore Democrats produced a 20-minute documentary in 1996 to explain its policies and platform to Singaporeans. Hitherto, the film was legal. But the PAP banned the video and quickly legislated to outlaw the production of such documentaries. However, the law applies only to the opposition.

Such is the abuse of power by the PAP. This has to change.

Terence who is organising the gig on April 30 asked my little tribe of alpha males to contribute a song. The following is a write-up for the song. Don't ask me for the song cuz we haven't even recorded a single note yet!

"Recorded at the Love Studios (which is actually a HDB bedroom) 2 weeks before we were coerced to contribute a song. This is a tune which most of our friends like and unfortunately, they are predominantly male, despite the song title.

Back in the pre-Internet Dark Ages, there was this media format known as VHS. We were back in our JC days, watching a Japanese cult classic movie together. As we huddled to watch the flick, a very pious classmate of ours claimed that he had seen it all since he watched Sharon Stone's 'Basic Instinct'. There was nothing that could faze him.

We played the tape. He was out of the door in less than 2 minutes.

The film was called 'High School Girls'. And the lyrics has absolutely nothing to do with the incident."

Aging Youth Productions is looking for photographers who have experience in group photo shoots and knows how to frame their subjects for use for a magazine cover.

What you will be doing

We will choose the cover story of each issue. You will be helping us to take photos for our web-zine cover. We have an available assignment on hand.

POW gig

It was a fun gig that we played with Lunarin last night at POW. Though we were fucken pissed with the owner for promising us free beer the whole night, he din upkeep his promise in the end. Fucken ang moh bastard!

Anyway, we are pretty upset as sexism truly still exists in modern society. We tried to say something funny... but no, no one was amused. But Linda of Lunarin says something. The guys in the pub start cracking up. Either she has better delivery than us or sexism is still the modern day evil.

The band should be tightening up our set this month for our gig at the Substation on Saturday 30 April. And we should be starting to do some home demos. Dunno what's the production schedule gonna be like though...

Once we have something up, I should be posting the tune up here. Thanks for those folks who came to support The Love Experiment over the past 2 weeks. You know who you are. Much love and thanks!

Just finished watching the new episode of the 2nd season of the O.C. Whaddaya know? The Album Leaf is actually featured in the O.C. though I can't remember what was the title of the song was.

But The Album Leaf rawks my bollawks...

We are playing at the Prince Of Wales pub this Sat again. This time round, we'll be taking the stage at 10pm, opening for our good friends Lunarin.

You know it's sad when you are using the other band to attract folks to watch your gig. Linda from Lunarin mentioned to me that her band uses the Braveheart strategy in times of adversity. When in doubt, always send the woman. Macham like sending Sophie Marceau to meet William Wallace.

Knowing that Alvin can only pull in that many people, I thought it's best we adopt the same strategy as well. Unfortunately, our bassist, Weiyuan is male. Despite his insistence on the reason why he's better than all female bassists (cuz he ain't wear no bra), I don't feel assured at all.

Anyway, people say that chicks with guitars always get guys wild. Here's some pictures of Linda playing bass. Yeah, we are adopting the Braveheart strategy as well.

The following is an excerpt of CHUD's interview with the EXTREMELY HOTT Miss Jessica Alba on her new movie, Sin City...

Q: Jessica, your character was topless in the comic book. Why did you want to play the character and why wouldn’t you do it topless?

Jessica: She was bottomless too. I wanted to do this movie because Robert Rodriguez was directing it, first and foremost. I didn’t really know it was a comic book when I read the sides, when I saw that he was directing something. I just tell my agent every month what is Robert doing? I want to do something with him. And Lee, one of my agents, has a really relationship with Robert and said, “You got an opportunity.” And I was like, “Excellent.” So I took that opportunity and ran with it. I auditioned the old fashioned way, went in for the casting director, put myself on tape and he had to approve. And it was like a week of “Does he think I suck? I just don’t want him to think I suck. I don’t care if I get the role. I just don’t want Robert to think I suck.” And he didn’t think I sucked and he came down and I read with him and I looked at the, by that time, I looked at the graphic novel and I saw all the pictures. I then found out she was a stripper and was bottomless and topless and, nudity was an option. We could have done it if we wanted to, I just felt too—

Q: Was it really an option?

Jessica: It absolutely was an option. Robert said that we could do it if we wanted to and obviously it would have been more authentic. But I felt like dancing around with a lasso and chaps was gonna be sexy enough. I think being nude, for me, would have been distracting and I really couldn’t be bottomless for my dad. He would really—I don’t know, he would disown me. He would freak out.

I have been drinking non-stop since last Thursday after the performance at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. Went to catch Electrico and Disagree in action at Rouge with The Massive and our immensely huge posse on Friday.

Played POW pub on Saturday and drank a shitload of free ale.

Helped out at my friend, Seong Huat's wedding. Drank copious amounts of beer and wine on Sunday.

My liver gives a silent prayer to the Lord for Monday is a restday...

Just sent in a piece of music to Jessica to pitch for her FYP short film. I dunno if she'd use it in the end. But fuck, it's fun to do this soundtrack thing...

I slutted my way into another friend's project. Apparently, it's a comedy. People who know me knows that I'm probably one of the funniest fuckers they know in their lives. I'm like prolly funnier than Yoda with a fucken lightsaber and I can dish 'em pop culture references too.

But that has absolutely nothing to do with the scoring of the soundtrack thing. Hell, it's fun. And finally, I'm starting to use the laptop for what I intially bought it for and not for watching...

Had a great rehearsal today. Finally feeling confident about the upcoming performance at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. We are prolly gonna debut 2 new ones. As Alvin hates "Love Conquers All", this is prolly gonna be the last time we are playing this song and another one which Billy didn't seem to like. Hey, we listen to our groupies...

One new instrumental which we stole the idea from Throb. I think we are calling it "My Purple Head Is Throbbing" as an ode to the fine, fine band. There's a new tune with Interpol-like chords akin to "Obstacle 1" but of course, we gace it the post-disco treatment (whatever that means...)

Hopefully, this time round, we'll nail the set well and all will be fine.

Just feel like a deflated balloon... Just finished a proposal for a venue which Aging Youth Productions is trying to secure. Trying to slap together some acts for the 1st series. Hopefully, it clears through. Publicity for the series will come through soon. We got the lobang from Sujin. Thanks, members!!! We owe you a beer...

Strangely, The Love Experiment ain't playing for this series. Hopefully, we'll make this one successful and we'd play the next.

Gonna start writing another 2 more in the weekend to pitch for another 2 events. Think I'm getting addicted to it. Hahahah, but if this goes thru, we'd be doing a mini post-rock/shoegazer/noise pop fest which is a pet project of mine. Just because I play post-disco doesn't mean I can't enjoy music which is less sexy.

Speaking of which, my post-rawker frens in Documentary In Amber was telling me that there were 3 girls who approached them to ask for their CDs after their set at Youth Park. And I ain't got none bitch!

I think post-disco ain't sellin' as well as it used to. Fuck.

This year's opening and closing films are both animae, Katsuhiro Otomo's 'Steamboy' and Mamoru Oshii's 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence'. Not particular a fan of Oshii since I din really like 'Ghost In The Shell' that much. Too wanky even for me... but I luuuurrrrvvvvveeeee 'Akira'. I might catch 'Steamboy' for the opening?

Still haven't decide what to catch this year. Hmmm... suggestions?
